I don’t often think of themes while writing a story. In fact, I usually don’t think much about themes until a question comes up where others have seen themes and then I try to sound all brilliant like I knew I put those in there! LMAOLooking back, at the screenplay and then the adapted novella, I can see a few themes in the story that are quite obvious.

One is the theme of family, the good and bad of family, and how family can integrate itself into your life and at times, try to rule your life. Daphne, the heroine of SN2BO, is an independent, sexually aggressive woman that wants what she wants when she wants it, and typically makes NO apologies for that. She says she loves her lifestyle, but does she really? And does her family and how it operates have anything to do with how she runs her life now?

This ties into another theme in the story: sex and love and how important (or not) they are in building a relationship. Whatever happened to getting to know a person before doing the do? LOL What happened to becoming friends and sharing interests and actually taking that info, those actions and then saying, “OK, we’re compatible, and I really enjoy him … and him me. He could get it?” LOL Daph is so into getting her Big O . . . but at what cost to love?

Another theme in Saying No is friendship. Daph’s two best friends lend her major support in the story . . . and also some angst. If you’re a do it, do it now type of gal, and one of your best friends is a monogamous married woman with children who believes in doing almost everything by the book, there is going to be some contention. If that same best friend wants to see your love life and overall happiness come to positive fruition, then that opens the door for some interesting action to occur that might spell trouble for Daph, her friends, and their relationships. How far is too far when trying to help a friend? Is there a limit?
